چکیده

Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial zoonosis, spread through the bites of infected ticks, that is most commonly caused in the United States by infection with the bacterium Ehrlichia chaffeensis. We retrospectively reviewed samples from an 18-month study of ehrlichiosis in the United States and found that E. ewingii was present in 10 (9.2%) of 109 case-patients with ehrlichiosis, a higher rate of infection with this species than had previously been reported. Two patients resided in New Jersey and Indiana, where cases have not been reported. All patients with available case histories recovered. Our study suggests a higher prevalence and wider geographic distribution of E. ewingii in the United States than previous reports have indicated.

Ehrlichia ewingii Infection in White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

Two closely related zoonotic ehrlichiae, Ehrlichia chaffeensis and E. ewingii, are transmitted by Amblyomma americanum, the lone star tick. Because white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are critical hosts for all mobile stages of A. americanum and are important vertebrate reservoirs of E. chaffeensis, we investigated whether deer may be infected with E. ewingii, a cause of granulocytotropi...

Persistent Ehrlichia ewingii Infection in Dogs after Natural Tick Infestation

BACKGROUND Ehrlichia ewingii, which causes disease in dogs and people, is the most common Ehrlichia spp. infecting dogs in the United States, but little is known about how long E. ewingii infection persists in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To evaluate the persistence of natural infection with E. ewingii in dogs. ANIMALS Four Class A Beagles; no previous exposure to ticks or tick-borne infecti...

Prevalence of Ehrlichia ewingii in Amblyomma americanum in North Carolina.

Ticks as vectors of Ehrlichia parasites have been the subject of study in North Carolina since 1993. Recently, Ehrlichia ewingii, which causes canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis, was documented as causing human illness in Missouri (3). Previously, the Lone Star tick, Amblyomma americanum, was confirmed as the vector of this parasite in dogs (2). Accordingly, in 1999, we focused our efforts on det...

Infections with Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Ehrlichia ewingii in persons coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus.

The clinical course and laboratory evaluation of 21 patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Ehrlichia chaffeensis or Ehrlichia ewingii are reviewed and summarized, including 13 cases of ehrlichiosis caused by E. chaffeensis, 4 caused by E. ewingii, and 4 caused by either E. chaffeensis or E. ewingii. Twenty patients were male, and the median CD4(+) T lymphocyte count was...

Ehrlichiosis and related infections.

Zoonosis Update T he term ehrlichiosis has been broadly applied to a variety of diseases of humans and animals caused by pathogens formerly classified in the genus Ehrlichia. However, a recently proposed taxonomic reorganization 1 has recommended the reclassifications of some former Ehrlichia species under the genera Anaplasma and Neorickettsia and Cowdria ruminantium under the genus Ehrlichia....
